Heritage On Horseback

Price: On Application

Auriel Robinson, who runs Seatrails in Sligo, provides this experience in collaboration with our stables. She will greet you before the ride commences and accompany you whilst out riding, sharing her knowledge of the local history, mythology and geology of the area.

She includes subjects such as the local Spanish Armada shipwrecks, island life, the Irish famine, seaweed harvesting, Mullaghmore Harbour, and she will point out nature throughout the ride along the shore, in the dunes, fields, and along the little country tracks.

This experience is unique in Ireland and completely refreshing.

For Booking and Enquiries: Check out her ‘Heritage on Horseback Trail’ on Seatrails website for options.

Auriel also offers her expert guiding services on other rides. You can choose a 1 hour beach ride, 2 hour beach and bog or a Mullaghmore ride.

We went horse-riding along the beach looking out at Dernish Island with horses from the Island View stables near Grange. We absolutely loved the whole experience. We got a talk from Auriel about the history of the area – especially about the Spanish Armada and it was very interesting. She also pointed out to us details about the flora and fauna of the area. The trail we set out on has got to be one of the most picturesque settings in the world – absolutely spectacular with Ben Bulben in the background. The completely unspoiled beach is amazing with the views of the castle in the distance. From the viewpoint of horseback we even saw a seal swimming in the inlet between the beach and the island. Although we were all complete beginners on horseback we loved every minute of it and would definitely recommend it to anyone thinking of doing it.
